Amanda Coulson, executive director of Volta

“VOLTA has historically always given over space at the Basel fair to non-profits and some local artists because we feel quite strongly that as “foreigners” coming in we should do more than profit off the commercial side of the art business; Basel has also become our “home” in a certain sense and we take that commitment seriously. Furthermore, the city of Basel itself — a place where the borders of Germany, France and Switzerland meet — is a city that reflects the coming together of cultures and languages many of us on the VOLTA team are hybrids (American/Bahamian/German; Italian/German/Swiss; Swiss/French) and are ourselves living in a place that was not our country or city of origin. We therefore all felt very strongly connected to the concept behind HomeBase Project was a very current topic and one that deserved the benefit of a major international platform and we are extremely pleased to have them with us.”

Our mission

The meaning of 'Home' has become ever more elusive and complex, especially in these times of financial uncertainty, rapid technological developments and extreme urban change. The HomeBase Project creates a unique platform for a multi-disciplinary artistic exploration of the notion of home as the foundation of humanity. It aims to foster a sense of interconnectedness in society through the arts, awaken social responsibility and integrate contemporary art into everyday urban living.
