‘The Trouble with Being Human These Days’

‘We live in a world which no longer questions itself, which lives from one day to another managing successive crises, without knowing where it is going and without trying to plan the itinerary’.
How accurate description of the global state of affairs these words are we only realize now, in 2011, twelve years after they were written in Zygmunt Bauman’s In search of politics. Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the University of Leeds, Polish Jew, an extraordinarily prolific scholar in political theory, philosophy, ethics, art history – Zygmunt Bauman is a unique figure in a great many respects. His life story would be enough to make a subject of an epic-sized documentary. But on top of everything else Zygmunt Bauman is simply a very wise man. ‘Late flowering’ is a phrase which best describes the period when he retired from academic work in 1990 and started to publish books almost annually. This incessant flow of ideas concerning subjects ranging from East Enders to Eastern European philosophy continues to this day. Unsurprisingly, Bauman’s insights into the pitfalls of globalisation and consumerism have always drawn attention of crowds far exceeding typical academic audience.

This film is a bold attempt at making a provocative, and yet informed diagnosis of the modern uncertainty. We are looking for parallels between Bauman’s personal life and his concepts of society and we aim at putting them in the context of our shared European, turbulent history. Over the course of six months we followed Zygmunt Bauman in his academic trips to Lithuania, Spain, Austria, Slovakia, Germany and Poland. What emerged as a result is a unique collection of footage including Bauman’s lectures, panel discussions, award ceremonies, but also informal interviews and very personal reflections filmed during walks in the stunning European locations. We’ve met his friends, collaborators, daughters and the grandson. This core structure of the film is intertwined with interviews with major figures in the field of sociology, politics and philosophy, such as George Ritzer, Neal Lawson, Andrew Simms, Cezary Wodzinski and Albert-László Barabási. In a sense this film is a ‘road movie’. It is a highly visual, avoiding conventional ‘talking heads’ journey through Bauman’s life and our anxieties. As the story unfolds, we start to realise that there is a dark side to our contemporary society, which we might never expected to see.

This video is a record of the site-specific work done by Felipe Arruda for the Homebase artist-in-residence program, in Berlin, March, 2012. “Short Passages of a Residency” is a fiction piece which takes place at the Homebase building (Pankow, Berlin) where 15 artists from different countries lived in community for three months. The story, written on the walls of the corridor, is narrated by Pnina, the cat that lives at Homebase, and which tells situations that involves her relationship to the place and the people during the period they have been together.

Brief description

‘I don’t see this happening’ is a live performance about home, identity, communication and communal living. Ordinary situations of the daily life we ‘tend’ not to see. It’s about the blindness of the everyday within the context of living together and its physical-intellectual multiple dynamics. This experimental performance aims to create a situation for the audience to reflect on the topic. If we don’t see what we see, we might like to assume our blindness and let the rest of our senses perceive what goes on around us and to listen to what happens to the ones that share the same space we inhabit. Who doesn’t have an ordinary life after all… Yes, so you do too.

* After the performance, we’ll serve dinner in which both the audience and the performers will sit together and share the same table, having the opportunity to discuss and reflect on each others experiences during the performance.

Ignatz Bier is a artisan craft pilsner, brewed by HomeBase artists, beer lovers, neighbours and social entrepreneurs at the old Engelhardt Brewery located at Thulestrasse 54, Berlin, now home to HomeBase LAB. Our beer was named after Herr Ignatz Nacher, the first landlord of teh building – a German-Jewish merchant, beer maker, director and main shareholder of the Engelhardt brewery. Nacher transformed Engelhardt brewery into one of the most successful breweries in Germany before it was taken over in the 1930’s by the Third Reich, in what became one of the biggest cases of Nazi expropriation.

The building of the HB LAB located at Thulestrasse 54, Pankow survived two world wars and went through dramatic sociopolitical shifts. Built in 1890, it housed the Engelhardt brewery from 1905 -1949, directed by Mr. Ignatz Nacher . In the 1930’s it was taken over by the Third Reich and after WWII it became a communist brewery, a youth hostel of the Freie Deutsche Jugend (Free German Youth) and remained deserted for nearly 20 year after the fall of the berlin wall. In the summer of 2010 HomeBase Project arrived from NYC and brought a new life to this place, with the vision of creating the old brewery into a year-round research and residency center devoted to questions of home, and the role of art & social change.

The last day of the HB BUILD festival, March 5th 2012, marks exactly 105 years since the historic photo. The day will include the re-staging of the Engelhardt photograph dated March 5th 1907 in which Ignatz Nacher along with the brewery workers are proudly standing in front of the building, celebrating the launch of Englehart Pilsner brewed on site. Participants in the March 5th 2012 will gather to reflect on the past while creating together a new future for the site – the building of a permanent home for the HomeBase project. The photograph will include artists, neighbors, beer lovers, the Mayor of Pankow, local schools and the public.

Ignatz Bier has been featured last year at VOLTA 7 and will be launched in the US at Volta NY, with the new photograph.

About Ignatz Nacher (1862 – 1939), a German-Jew began work at the brewery in 1901 and rose from a low-level worker to become its general director and majority shareholder. He invented the pasteurization of beer and under his management, the company became Germany’s second largest beer brewing conglomerate with several factories throughout the country and a beer garden. He was also known for his philanthropic work and built orphanages and old age homes. In 1934, his property was seized by the Nazi Regime and the profitable brewery was used to fund the war machine. Nacher tried to resist the takeover of the company, but he was arrested and ultimately deported to Switzerland where shortly after he died in poverty. The logo of the Engelhardt (which means angel heart) Brewery was changed from an angel with black hair to blond – signifying the aryanization of the brand.

HomeBase Project Exhibits at VOLTA NY Booth #P-02
March 8 – 11, 2012

Download the prespack
HomeBase Project (homebaseproject.org), an artist run nonprofit is invited back to VOLTA – booth #P-02 – for the second consecutive year. The organization will showcase the ways in which it fulfills it’s mission to apply contemporary art as an agent for social change within an urban setting.

For the past seven years, HomeBase Project (HB) has been transforming vacant buildings in neighborhoods undergoing transition – in New York City’s Lower East Side, Harlem, and Greenpoint, and currently in Berlin – into site-specific spaces where an international roster of artists explore the notion of ‘home.’ These temporary projects are designed to connect art to everyday urban living, cultivating community, and cross-cultural dialogue.

In 2010 HB established a home in an abandoned, historic brewery in the Pankow district of Berlin. This temporary sojourn expanded into HomeBase LAB – an ongoing, year-round residency and research program. The next HB project is planned for Jerusalem, and satellite projects will take place simultaneously in New York and Berlin.

“Berlin has been a turning point for HB,” says Anat Litwin, artistic director and founder of the project. “The extended residency has given HB artists and the team the opportunity to deepen the creative exploration of the meaning of ‘home.’ We are now vested the history and future of the brewery building, and developing ways to serve the neighborhood. We are coming to VOLTA NY to share our vision for fostering interconnectedness.”

This year’s booth contains:

Introducing HB Service which include consultations, commissioning, and implementing artist-residencies and public programs that cultivate social consciousness built on the HomeBase model;

Sale of HB products including Ignatz Bier, an artisanal pilsner brewed at HomeBase LAB Berlin that contains a “message in a bottle” (more information follows below),, as well as limited edition, signed bottles of beer from the third batch of Ignatz Bier, a unique collector’s item;

An offering of original art work on the topic of ‘home’ commissioned in ‘ready to go’ boxes, created by HomeBase Project alumni artists.

“We all felt very strongly connected to the concept behind HomeBase Project,” says Amanda Coulson, artistic director of VOLTA. “It is a very current topic and one that deserves the benefit of a major international platform and we are extremely pleased to have them with us.”

HomeBase Project is one of a few nonprofit organizations that have been given a booth at VOLTA NY. HomeBase Project is a participant in the Fiscal Sponsorship Program of FJC, a registered 501(c) 3 organization in the USA and also is registered as a non for profit in Europe. Purchases and donations made at the VOLTA NY booth are tax-deductible to the amount permitted by law, and benefit HomeBase Project and artists.

About the HomeBase Project

HomeBase Project was founded in 2006 as site-specific public art project exploring the notion of home. Multi-disciplinary artists take up residence in a building in an urban area undergoing transition. The artists take part in research programs and workshops, group dinners and discussions, and are signed their own room in which they create site-specific art installations on the topic of home. The space is then open free to the public to view artists’ rooms, and experience a range of programming including lectures, performances, open mic sessions, workshops and parties. All aspects of the production are documented from start to finish and include notations of logistics, group dynamics of the HB team and HB artists, the creative processes and interactions with the neighborhood, the community, and the public at large.

About Ignatz Bier and the Historic Engelhardt Brewery

Pankow neighbors told HB the story of the building they were inhabiting. Built in 1895. the building was the home of the Engelhardt Brewery from 1905-1949. Under the direction of Mr. Ignatz Nacher, a German-Jewish entrepreneur, the brewery became one of Germany’s most successful and was expropriated by the Nazi’s in the 1930’s. following WWII it became a communist brewery, a youth hostel of the Freie Deutsche Jugend (Free German Youth / Communist youth movement) and remained deserted for nearly 20 year after the fall of the Berlin Wall. In 2010 HB arrived with an international group of artists, who brought to the building a new life.

On March 5th 2011, 104 years since the first pilsner was introduced on site, HB created along with neighbors, artists, brewers, and beer lovers, an artisinal tribute beer in honor of Ignatz Nacher. During the process, it also came to symbolize how artists can reapproptiate and infuse life into an empty building.a March 5th has become the date for an annual communal art event at the HomeBaseLAB.
